Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death, saying Hassan died on Monday morning at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital. Burial arrangements were being made in Zanzibar, the family’s home region.
A Private Figure Beside a Public Presidency
Hafidh Ameir Hassan was an agricultural academic who maintained a low public profile. He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021, when Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency following the death of John Magufuli and became the country’s first female head of state.
The couple married in 1978 and had four children. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
Because he generally remained outside the political spotlight, Hassan’s public role was less visible than that of many presidential spouses. His death nevertheless carries national significance because it touches the first family and a presidency that has become an important part of Tanzania’s contemporary political history.
Condolences From Across the Region
Condolences were sent by leaders across East and Southern Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto described the loss as deeply personal for President Hassan and her family, while Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye offered prayers and sympathy to Tanzania. Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema also expressed solidarity with the first family and the Tanzanian people.
The messages reflected the close relationships among governments in the region, where national events affecting a head of state often draw a collective response. Afrikeye has recently reported on the wider diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and Egypt as the country continues to strengthen regional and international partnerships.
President Hassan and her family are expected to observe funeral arrangements in Zanzibar. The government had not announced any constitutional or administrative change arising from the bereavement.
