Uganda is set to host the inaugural African Dragon Boat Cup Diplomacy from 1st to 4th October 2026, marking a historic milestone in regional sports diplomacy. This announcement was made by Mr. Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, during a high-level meeting with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting included a visiting delegation from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation, led by Mr. Ehab Gouda and Ms. Mary Lai, General Secretary of the continental body. The officials are in Uganda to evaluate the nation’s readiness to host the event, certify local officials, and inspect the venues to ensure world-class standards.
Promoting Sports Diplomacy and Tourism
Dragon Boat is a traditional sport with over 2,500 years of history in China and more than 50 million players globally, including 40 million in China alone. Hosting the African Dragon Boat Cup Diplomacy event provides Uganda a unique platform to showcase tourism, investment, and trade opportunities while using sports as a bridge for cultural and economic diplomacy.
Ms. Mary Lai emphasized that the 2026 event will strengthen Uganda sports diplomacy by attracting international attention and enhancing people-to-people relations across continents.
A Gathering of Global Talent
Next year’s event will feature over 500 professional athletes from 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. Participants will be followed by hundreds of fans on-site and millions of viewers online, providing Uganda with significant visibility on the global sports stage.
Ambassador Kabonero highlighted the federation’s efforts to promote Dragon Boat sport in Uganda, noting it provides opportunities for locals to explore their talent, while simultaneously marketing Uganda as a vibrant destination for international sports and cultural exchange.
