In a powerful demonstration of national pride and commitment to youth development, President Joseph Boakai has initiated a bold new chapter for Liberian football. The President recently hosted a high-profile fundraising dinner aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Liberia Lonestar as the national team prepares for the highly anticipated 2027 Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The exclusive rally was held not just to generate crucial funds, but to publicly recognize the immense commitment, sacrifice, and discipline of the players.
Massive Boost in Player Compensation
Recognizing that consistent athletic excellence requires substantial financial backing, the Government of Liberia, operating through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, announced a landmark improvement in player compensation.
To motivate the squad ahead of their upcoming competitive matches in Rwanda scheduled for 2027, the government has authorized a 150% increase in both appearance fees and winning bonuses. Player appearance fees have been upgraded from $1,000 to $2,500 USD, while winning bonuses will match that increase, jumping from $1,000 to $2,500 USD.

Building Systems Over Nostalgia
During his keynote address at the event, President Boakai emphasized that the future of the Liberia Lonestar relies on sustainable infrastructure rather than simply reminiscing about the glory days of past football legends.

“When we invest in sports, we invest in our young people, and when we invest in our young people, we invest in the future of Liberia,” the President stated. He noted that the country’s hurdle has never been a lack of raw ability. “Our problem has never been the absence of talent. Our challenge has been the building the system necessary to find, develop, and support the talent,” the President added.
Partnering for Infrastructure
A major component of this new systemic approach involves private sector partnerships. President Boakai expressed profound gratitude to the Bea Mountain Corporation, which has committed to constructing two state-of-the-art football academies in the country. These facilities will be the first of their kind in Liberia, designed to nurture the next generation of athletes from the grassroots level.
The fundraising rally proved to be a solid starting point for this ambitious vision. Out of the $10 million target, the event successfully raised slightly over $3 million. Concluding the evening, President Boakai issued a strong call to action, urging government officials and private investors to step beyond mere donations and become active, long-term partners in rebuilding the Liberia Lonestar into a formidable force in African football.
