Kentucky University Sports Students Gain Global Insight Through Leadership Development in South Africa

Students from the University of Kentucky recently returned from South Africa with new perspectives after an unforgettable international education experience. The trip, part of the Global Sport in Africa program, focused on using sport as a tool for cultural exchange, teamwork, and leadership development in sports.

Exploring Leadership Through Global Sport

Led by faculty from the UK College of Education’s Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department, the program immerses students in Africa’s vibrant sports culture. “Students who engage deeply with other cultures gain tools, perspectives, and networks that enhance their leadership,” said Kwame Agyemang, Ph.D., Director of the Future of Sport Institute.

Agyemang explained that by partnering with African sports organizations, participants learn to navigate emerging sport economies and develop resilience — skills vital for Kentucky University sports and beyond.

Learning Beyond the Scoreboard

Through collaboration with Immersion Africa, students explored Africa’s sports ecosystem, from local stadiums to community outreach initiatives. They witnessed firsthand how sports influence economic and social growth. “These experiences show that sport extends beyond competition — it connects communities,” Agyemang added.

Students attended soccer and rugby matches, met administrators, and studied sports management in developing markets. The trip also included visits to Langa Township, exposing students to diverse life experiences that broadened their global mindset.

Transformative Student Experiences

Senior Miliana Teson, studying sport communication, said, “This experience challenged me to think critically about culture and sport globally. It helped me grow both academically and personally.” Sophomore Deven Royal noted, “Seeing different sports environments opened my eyes to how leadership and creativity thrive in new settings.”

Junior Angelina Maruskin added, “Learning sport culture firsthand — touring stadiums, interviewing coaches, attending matches — was far more impactful than reading about it. It showed me how sports culture varies globally.”

Building Global Leaders

Kate Meyer, Associate Director of Education Abroad and Exchanges, highlighted that international education experiences enhance adaptability and independence. “Programs like these prepare students to lead with confidence, cultural intelligence, and vision — traits essential for success in global and Kentucky University sports careers.”

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Agyemang emphasized that immersing students in global sport systems builds leaders ready to advance Kentucky’s sports landscape. “We aim to connect local needs with global opportunities — that’s the future of leadership development sports,” he said.

The program’s next session is scheduled for May 12–June 1, 2026, with applications due by Feb. 1.
