UNMISS Peacekeepers Rescue Three Civilians After Canoe Capsizes on River Nile in Malakal

MALAKAL, UPPER NILE STATE — A routine trading journey across the River Nile nearly ended in a major disaster when strong winds and high waves completely overturned a local transport canoe. The vessel, which was carrying three South Sudanese civilians alongside commercial goods, capsized near Malakal in Upper Nile State.

Within moments of the accident, the passengers found themselves struggling in the fast-moving river currents as their boat and entire cargo disappeared beneath the waves.

Swift Maritime Intervention by Bangladeshi Peacekeepers

The life-threatening incident was witnessed firsthand by alert peacekeepers from the Bangladesh Force Marine Unit serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Recognizing the immediate danger, the maritime unit deployed two rapid patrol boats to the scene, successfully extracting all three civilians safely from the fast-flowing water.

Beyond saving lives, the comprehensive recovery operation focus extended to protecting local economic livelihoods. The Bangladeshi peacekeepers managed to recover the submerged canoe and successfully salvaged between 10 and 15 bags of charcoal that the passengers had been transporting. For families living in the Upper Nile region, this river trade serves as a vital source of daily income.

“The rescued civilians were taken to the Bangladesh Boat Pool, where a medical team was on standby to provide emergency assistance,” stated Lieutenant Commander Fahim Ahmed, the designated Team Leader of the rescue operation.

Medical Evaluation and Safe Return

While two of the survivors escaped unharmed, one of the civilians sustained an injury to his right toe during the capsize. He received immediate medical treatment at the UN Peacekeeping Field Hospital and was safely discharged later the same day. Following the medical evaluation, all three civilians returned to their homes with their recovered canoe and cargo intact.

For countless riverine communities along the Nile, water networks remain an indispensable transport route for moving essential goods like food, firewood, and charcoal between remote villages and regional markets. However, unpredictable weather changes and sudden storms can rapidly transform standard crossings into lethal emergencies.

Ensuring Safety and Securing Livelihoods

Commenting on the structural importance of river security, Lieutenant Commander Ahmed added:

“The rapid response by the Bangladesh Force Marine Unit helped prevent what could have become a tragic loss of life. This is a significant role peacekeepers continue to play in ensuring the safety and well-being of local communities in Upper Nile State.”

Local residents in Malakal widely commended the rescue mission, emphasizing that despite weather-related vulnerabilities, Nile transport is essential for daily survival. They noted that the peacekeepers’ swift intervention not only saved human lives but directly protected the economic stability of families relying heavily on river trade.

Whether managing security threats, facilitating critical humanitarian access, or executing emergency rescue operations on the water, UNMISS peacekeepers remain an essential line of defense in protecting vulnerable communities across South Sudan.
