In a landmark medical breakthrough, skilled surgeons in Oman at Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital have successfully removed a rare skull base tumor from a 38-year-old Nigerian patient after a highly complex 11-hour procedure. This extraordinary achievement reinforces the rising global reputation of Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital treatment standards and Oman’s rapidly advancing healthcare sector.

The case highlights Oman’s expanding medical tourism appeal and the growing capabilities of Omani specialists in handling high-risk, multidisciplinary surgeries. You can also explore medical-travel options through our internal link: https://travel.afrikeye.com/

A Rare and High-Risk Case Managed with Precision

Inverted papillomas are extremely rare, accounting for just 0.5–4% of nasal tumors and occurring in only 0.75–1.5 cases per 100,000 people. After years of unsuccessful treatments in multiple countries, the patient, Michael Ojabo, turned to Oman for help, drawn by the proven expertise of Aster doctors and the hospital’s reputation for advanced care.

His condition had worsened steadily since 2018, causing intense facial pressure, eye bulging, and pain. The benign but aggressive tumor had grown into the nasal cavity, brain, and eye socket — requiring immediate and highly specialized intervention involving rare skull base tumor surgery.

  • Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital Treatment: A Multidisciplinary Success

Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital accepted the challenging case and assembled a multidisciplinary team of ENT, neurosurgery, oculoplastic surgery, and anesthesia specialists. The operation on May 24, 2025, involved:

    • Craniotomy to access the brain-invading portion

    • Removal of tumor mass from the nasal cavity and orbit

    • Image-guided navigation for accuracy

    • Microscopic and endoscopic tools for safe extraction

    • Real-time monitoring to protect vital structures

The team of skilled surgeons in Oman included Dr. Khalil Ibrahim Macki (ENT), Dr. Shashivadhanan (Neurosurgery), Dr. Alyaqdhan Al Ghafri (Oculoplastic), and others who worked seamlessly for 11 hours to complete the surgery.

Life-Changing Recovery After Complex Skull Base Surgery

Michael’s breathing tube was removed the same day, and he was discharged only five days later. Follow-up scans confirmed complete tumor removal with no damage to the brain or vision. His facial appearance returned to normal, and he resumed a healthy, active life.

Reflecting on his successful Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital treatment, Michael said he felt safe from the moment he arrived and praised the doctors for restoring his health and confidence.

A Major Milestone for Oman’s Healthcare and Medical Tourism

Hospital leaders emphasize that this case proves Oman can deliver world-class specialist care without patients needing to travel abroad. The success supports the country’s broader vision to emerge as a global healthcare destination under the “Treat in Oman” initiative.

The surgical team highlighted the rarity of inverted papillomas extending into both the brain and orbit — making this outcome a remarkable example of advanced medicine, collaboration, and expertise.

Oman’s Growing Leadership in Advanced Medical Care

With rapidly improving infrastructure, an experienced medical workforce, and advanced technology, Oman is becoming a center for complex surgeries such as rare skull base tumor surgery. The role of skilled surgeons in Oman has been central to this transformation, offering hope to international patients seeking high-quality treatment closer to home.
