The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has initiated a detailed stakeholder consultation process ahead of the next round of the National Dialogue in South Africa. This marks a key milestone for the south africa dialogue as it moves toward the appointment of its Steering Committee and reflects a deep commitment to involving national dialogue participants from all sectors of society.
Steering Committee Nominations Signal Progress
The process has progressed significantly: no fewer than 26 sectors have already submitted nominees for the Steering Committee. The first National Convention, held on 15‑16 August 2025, approved the mandate, responsibilities and composition of the committee. Each sector then launched a stakeholder consultation to choose nominees for the Steering Committee and its sub‑committees.
Role of the Steering Committee in the South Africa Dialogue
Once finalised and approved by the President, the newly formed Steering Committee will drive the next phase of the south africa dialogue, coordinating nationwide public engagements. The full list of nominees has been submitted to the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) for quality assurance. The EPG will then forward its recommendations to the President, acting as convener of the National Dialogue.
Leadership and Institutional Support
President Cyril Ramaphosa received the Handover Report from the Convention Organising Committee (COC) and the National Convention Report, marking the end of the COC’s mandate. He praised the broad‑based participation and the crucial role of civil society. “What is extremely important now is that the momentum built and the expectations raised are not allowed to dissipate,” he stated, emphasising the role of national dialogue participants in sustaining momentum.
A dedicated National Dialogue Secretariat, housed within National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC), is being established to provide institutional support. The EPG, the Inter‑Ministerial Committee and the Presidency will safeguard the process’s integrity until its formal hand‑over to the Steering Committee.
