Eritrea Advances Conflict Resolution Efforts Through Reconciliation Committees
The Ministry of Justice, led by Minister Fauzia Hashim, recently convened a crucial meeting with reconciliation committees representing all sub-zones within Eritrea’s Central Region. This gathering aimed to assess the progress and challenges faced by these committees since their inception a year ago.
Reviewing Reconciliation Committee Roles in Community Disputes
During the meeting, a detailed evaluation of the reconciliation committees’ work was conducted, focusing on their traditional dispute resolution approaches. These community-based committees have been pivotal in resolving local conflicts, promoting unity, and fostering social stability.
Minister Fauzia emphasized the ministry’s commitment to strengthening national values, combating harmful behaviors, and promoting peace and development. She highlighted that Eritrea’s armed struggle for independence was a collective effort rooted in the people, serving as the foundation for the nation’s social sovereignty.
Robust Participation Across the Central Region
Currently, 415 elected reconciliation committee members operate across 83 administrative areas within the Central Region, playing a vital role in grassroots conflict resolution efforts. Minister Fauzia called for continued active engagement from all stakeholders to ensure the effectiveness of these committees.
Through these conflict resolution efforts, Eritrea is reinforcing peacebuilding mechanisms by integrating traditional dispute resolution methods with formal governance structures.
