Enugu Digital Transformation Fuels Tech Talent and Innovation Ecosystem

ENUGU, Nigeria, October 2025 — Once known as a coal city, Enugu is redefining its future through an ambitious enugu digital transformation plan focused on infrastructure, innovation, and youth empowerment. With policies supporting enugu tech talent development and a thriving enugu innovation ecosystem, the city is rapidly becoming a new technology hub in Nigeria.

From Coal Power to Code Power

The Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Dr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh, says Enugu is proving that technology—not coal—can drive economic growth. Governor Peter Mbah’s administration aims to grow the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within eight years, with technology contributing over 10%.

The ministry’s initiatives include free right-of-way for fibre Internet service providers, encouraging startups and broadband expansion. “You can walk into the state and lay cable without being charged even a dime,” Dr. Ezeh said. This move lowers operational costs for ISPs and accelerates Enugu’s digital transformation journey.

Building Tech Talent for the Future

The state’s focus on enugu tech talent development stems from its rich educational base, hosting over 30 tertiary institutions. Organizations like Genesys, Xend Finance, and Sparks Ventures Hub are cultivating young innovators through practical training and startup support. Alumni from these programs now work at top firms like Microsoft and Google, while others have launched homegrown tech ventures.

Cafes and hubs across the city, such as CafeOne Enugu, have become collaboration spaces where young developers and entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable products.

Policy, Power, and Partnership

Dr. Ezeh’s leadership emphasizes collaboration between the government and private sector to strengthen Enugu’s innovation ecosystem. The administration has launched new CNG buses, developed independent power systems, and introduced a subnational airline to improve mobility and productivity.

“The Ministry has gone completely paperless,” Dr. Ezeh shared, highlighting e-governance as a core achievement. “We’re ensuring that every other ministry integrates innovation and technology.”

Economic Growth and Fiscal Reforms

Enugu’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) surged from ₦37.6 billion in 2023 to ₦180.5 billion in 2024—a 4.8× leap—proving the success of tech-driven reforms. The 2025 budget allocates ₦320.6 billion to education, ₦10 billion to security, and ₦20 billion to agriculture, further reinforcing the city’s sustainable growth vision.

Enugu Tech Festival: Showcasing Innovation

The maiden Enugu Tech Festival (ETF) in May 2025 drew over 28,000 participants, surpassing expectations. The event showcased enugu innovation ecosystem strength with local startups, tech leaders, and investors. All event management tools, from ticketing to branding, were developed locally—underscoring Enugu’s growing tech self-sufficiency.

As Chinyere Otuonye, Founder of Sparks Ventures Hub, explained, “ETF is not just another tech event—it’s a platform for connecting innovators, investors, and policymakers to build a smarter Enugu.”

The Future of Enugu’s Digital Ambition

Enugu’s leaders envision a future where local talent powers global industries. “We’re not comparing ourselves to other Nigerian states,” said Dr. Ezeh. “Our benchmark is global.” With continued investment in enugu digital transformation, the city is set to rival Africa’s leading tech hubs.
