LAGOS, Nigeria, October 2025 — MTN Nigeria and Huawei have unveiled Nigeria’s first-ever 400G/800G Hybrid Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) in Lagos, a major leap forward in huawei network advancements and ultra-broadband solutions in Africa.

The deployment introduces a new era of digital reliability and efficiency, empowering MTN Nigeria to meet the nation’s growing data and connectivity demands. This milestone reflects a shared commitment to expanding Africa’s next-generation digital infrastructure.

Transforming Nigeria’s Digital Backbone

According to MTN Nigeria CTO Yahaya Ibrahim, the new hybrid optical network enables the operator to lower data transmission costs while improving service reliability across mobile, home broadband, and enterprise sectors. “With 400G/800G optical channels, MTN can deliver more stable, high-capacity connectivity that strengthens revenue protection,” Ibrahim said.

Huawei’s Optical Transmission President Gavin Gu highlighted that integrating latest network technologies like 400G/800G coherent optics and OXC switching has built a solid F5.5G foundation. “We’re proud to innovate alongside MTN to boost regional ICT capacity and move Africa closer to the intelligent world,” he added.

Technical Milestones

The project achieved two significant breakthroughs:

  • The first activation of L0 + L1 ASON (Optical and Electrical switching) on Nigeria’s DWDM backbone.
  • The first single-wavelength 800G optical channel deployment in West Africa.

These advancements showcase Huawei’s leadership in high-speed optical transport, enabling scalable, cost-efficient, and intelligent broadband infrastructure.

Shaping Africa’s Digital Future

This collaboration strengthens MTN’s position as a broadband innovation leader and reinforces Huawei’s role in Africa’s ultra-broadband solutions in Africa. The project sets a new standard for future-ready connectivity that will drive Africa’s digital transformation and economic inclusion.

Huawei will continue its partnership with MTN to expand huawei network advancements and latest network technologies, supporting intelligent optical networks across the continent.
